With the economy the slowest it has been in over a decade, and no sign of it improving any time soon, things have become tougher for fundraising professionals. I too have had to work harder with donors who, in previous years, were considered a “sure thing.”
That being said, it’s still important to remember two very important things. First, that getting through these difficult times means reverting back to the basics of fundraising. As suggested by a recent AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) e-newsletter, the principles and strategies that have been consistent techniques for years are the ones that will allow you to navigate the troubled economy.
The most basic of these skills, is to continue and even strengthen your relationship with your donors. Find out if the economy is hitting them hard, or if times are good. And stay closely connected to them even if times are bad. Don’t loose sight of the long-term relationship that you have the potential to build.
Second, it’s vital to remember that our work and our programs are needed now more than ever. The non-profit organizations that will be able to weather the storm, are the ones that are able to show how truly important and necessary every donation is. Working on your organization’s case, and having solid reasons for its support, will allow you to communicate this critical message much more effectively.
INDC will continue to be what it has always been for you; a strong resource that helps develop the skills of fundraisers who make a tremendous difference in the lives of those who need it most.
INDC is steadfast in its mission to help you succeed.
I look forward to seeing you all at the January meeting.
Sincerely,
Keith O’Brien
